It is far too simplistic to say that they were missing Gareth Bale. Tottenham were embarrassed here at the San Siro because they got too cocky. They were too open, too complacent and carried too many passengers. Andrea Cassano may have pulled the strings as Inter Milan stormed to an impressive victory, but that was because Spurs appeared to believe they only had to turn up to complete their Italian job. They played far too high up the pitch and were too naive in their belief that Inter would play with the same lack of passion that saw them swept aside at White Hart Lane last week.
Back at the stadium where they had been beaten just once in 17 games in all competitions before this contest, the real Inter turned up. The Serie A side ended up restoring pride to the shirt and leaving Spurs in no doubt that they were lucky to take their place in Friday’s lunchtime draw. To be fair to Andre Villas Boas he has carried all before him in this competition, having won it with Porto two years ago and seen off both Lazio and Lyon.
His insistence of treating the competition with respect has also won him friends and may well have influenced other clubs to take it more seriously. He, though, freely admitted after the final whistle last night that Emmanuel Adebayor’s extra time goal had saved his bacon. A 4-4-2 line-up against a Milan team fighting to save their manager’s job – and with such a good home record – was simply suicide. Forget this nonsense about Bale not being there. Spurs have lost only one of the seven games that they had played without him this season before last night, winning four. The Spurs formation played a huge part in this shambles.
