23 security men die in Karakuram Highway road accident
Saturday, March 16th, 2013 10:19:46 by Tahir KhanAt least 23 Pakistani security men were killed in a road accident in mountainous northern areas on Saturday, the army said.
Five others security men were also injured when their coaster plunged into a ravine in Kohistan on the Karakuram Highway, which connects Pakistan with China, a police officer in the region said.
The bus was heading to the northern city of Gilgit from Rawalpindi.
Police said that 30 troops were on board when their vehicle met with the accident.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the accident occurred due to speed and the driver lost control and slipped into a deep ravine near Samar Nala.
Witnesses said the bus started rolling down the steep face of the gorge and finally came to a stop at the rocky bottom of the hill several hundred feet down under.
Emergency police arrived at the scene and started pulling out the bodies and shifted the injured to hospital.
Road accidents in the country are mainly blamed on poor road condition and violation of traffic laws.
