Babar says deadlock over caretaker PM to be resolved

Presidential spokesman, Senator Farhatullah Babar, says he is hopeful that the deadlock over the nomination of a caretaker Prime Minister, who will supervise parliamentary elections, will be resolved.

A caretaker Prime Minister will be installed as the current assemblies have completed five-year constitutional term and would be dissolved later on Saturday.

Prime Minister, Raja Pervez Ashraf and the main opposition party had exchanged names of six possible candidates for the office; however, both sides have so far failed to reach a consensus.

The government and the opposition Pakistan Muslim League (PML-M) have now withdrawn one name each from their lists and now four candidates are in the run which include two former judges of the top court, a senior politician and the former head of the state bank.

The opposition has rejected the government’s nominees and the Prime Minister’s office says that he is in touch with the opposition leader to resolve the issue.

As the government has now few hours the presidential spokesman, senator Farhatullah Babar, says that the deadlock will be removed and a consensus man will take over as the caretaker Prime Minister.

If the government and the opposition failed to reach consensus, then the issue will be referred to a parliamentary committee which will forward it to the Chief Election Commissioner for a final announcement.

The Prime Minister, Raja Pervez Asharf, will address the national Saturday evening and is likely to touch on the issue of the caretaker setup.

The Prime Minister has also invited chief ministers of four provinces for consultations on the elections and the issue of the caretaker Prime Minister could also come under discussion.

They will also discuss holding the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies on same day.

The presidential spokesman said that there had been some progress on the name of the caretaker Prime Minister and the issue will not referred to the parliamentary committee and the Election Commission’s chief.

Babar told the local media that the Prime Minister is likely to announce a consensus name in his televised speech.
