Female surfers continue campaign for ASP Women’s World Title at Drug Aware Margaret Pro River
Monday, March 18th, 2013 4:08:00 by Muhammad Qasim HassanThe top females from around the globe resumed their campaign for the 2013 ASP Women’s World Championship title at Margaret River in Australia on Saturday, March 16, 2013, where Drug Aware Margaret River Pro got underway in solid six-to-eight foot waves.
The conditions promised to deliver a heavy dose of thrilling action and plenty of entertainment, since there was a lot of juice in the waves.
The proceedings got underway with America’s Courtney Conlogue finding herself pitted against Hawaii’s Coco Ho and New Zealand’s Paige Hareb in the first heat.
It turned out to be a pretty one-sided affair, with the American surfer walking away with a comprehensive win.
The next heat saw the former ASP Women’s World Champion Carissa Moore from Hawaii clinching a convincing win over her compatriot Malia Manuel and America’s Sage Erickson.
Australia’s Felicity Palmateer stunned the crowd and, from the looks of it, reigning five-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore by getting the better of her compatriot despite being the underdog. France’s Pauline Ado finished third in the heat.
Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons claimed top honours in the fourth heat by downing South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag and Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich.
“The last few events have been in smaller waves so I think it’s important to come here early to get used to the line-up and waves,” Fitzgibbons said. “I’ve been free surfing out there for a few days so I feel like I’ve got the positioning figured out. Towards the end of the heat there was a couple of big sets and it felt great to score a couple of 9s and do some big turns. It felt good, I’m stoked to be back here in Margaret River.”
Coming straight from her win at Roxy Pro Gold Coast, Australia’s Tyler Wright kept the momentum going by registering a win in her Round 1 heat against her fellow countryperson Rebecca Woods and Brazil’s Silvana Lima.
The final heat of Round 1 also saw an Australian surfer claim success. Laura Enever was made to work hard for the win by America’s Lakey Peterson and Hawaii’s Alana Blanchard, but she managed to finish on top in the end.
