Pakistan’s 1965 war hero M M Alam passes away
Monday, March 18th, 2013 9:56:43 by Tahir KhanPakistan’s national hero, world famous fighter pilot and a legend of the 1965 war, Air Commodore (Retired) Muhammad Mahmood Alam breathed his last Monday morning in Karachi after a prolonged illness, the spokesman for Pakistan Air Force said. He was 78 years old.
He was suffering from lungs problem and was also recently admitted to hospital.
President Asif Ali Zardari, the supreme commander of the armed forces, expressed sorrow at the death of Alam and paid tribute to his contributions towards defending the country.
“Alam was a source of inspiration who made the people proud through his valour and unmatched bravery,” he said.
The Air Chief also expressed shock at the MM Alam’s death.
“Our hero left us to make his final flight to the eternal destination. Personality, character and sacrifices of this brave Pakistani are beyond any word of description,” Chief of the Air Staff said on behalf of all ranks of Pakistan Air Force.
He expressed sympathy with the family of the national hero and prayed for his departed soul.
Alam was a North American F-86 Sabre Flying ace and one-star general, who served with the Pakistan Air Force. He was awarded the Sitara-e-Jurat (“The star of courage”).
While posted in Sargodha‚ he had downed nine Indian fighters in air-to-air combat‚ including six Hawker Hunter fighters.
In one mission on 7th September 1965‚ he downed 5 Indian aircraft in less than a minute, the first four within 30 seconds, establishing a world record.
