Lawyers boycott against attack on Peshawar judicial complex
Tuesday, March 19th, 2013 10:33:58 by Tahir KhanLawyers across Pakistan Tuesday boycotted courts’ proceedings against the yesterday’s audacious suicide attack on judicial complex in Peshawar.
At least four people were killed and nearly 30 others were injured in the Monday’s attack.
Two armed bombers sneaked into the complex in high security zone and started indiscriminate firing and later exploded their vests.
Lawyers did not appear in courts and the Chief Justice Peshawar High Court, Justice Dost Muhammad Khan, termed the attack as assault on the whole judiciary.
Visiting the targeted complex, he said that the assailants will get a befitting response to such attacks.
No group has yet claimed responsibility however Information Minister in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mian Iftikhar Hussain blamed the Taliban for the attack and said they want to disrupt election process through such attacks.
The attack coincided with the Taliban announcement to withdraw their dialogue offer to the government, raising concerns about more attacks.
The PHC Chief Justice said that foreign elements may be behind the attack.
The attack also raised doubts about the capability of the law enforcement agencies as to how the armed men succeeded to enter the security zone and launched attack in a sensitive area. The complex is closed to the office of the Corps Commander Peshawar, Provincial assembly, a five-star hotel, and central jail.
It is unclear why the judicial complex came under attack. Mian Iftikhar is of the view it might be an attempt to get freed Taliban prisoners either in the Peshawar jail or from courts who are produced before the judges.
Whatever the motives have been, the law enforcement agencies will have to improve their intelligence to frustrate any such plan before it is implemented.
The coming elections will be a biggest challenge for the caretaker set up and the security agencies as the Taliban have asked the people not to join and go close to rallies of the PPP, ANP and the MQM.
