Election schedule to be announced on March 23

President Asif Ali Zardari has set May 11 for parliamentary elections, presidential spokesman senator Farhatullah Babar said.
A spokesman of the Election Commission announced that the process of submission of nomination papers will begin on March 25, two adapter the announcement of the schedule. He said the process of submission of nomination papers by the candidates will be completed on March 30.
Scrutiny of nomination papers would begin on March 31st and will continue for seven days.
Candidates can withdraw their nomination papers by April 18 while final list of the contesting candidates would be published the following day.
In view of a deadlock over the nomination of the caretaker Prime Minister between the former ruling Pakistan Peoples Party and the main opposition Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), a parliamentary committee Wednesday started consultations to reach a consensus.
The deadlock started as both the major parties rejected each other’s proposed names for the interim Prime Minister.
Under the constitution, the parliamentary committee has to evolve a consensus on one name for the caretaker prime minister within three days and if it fails to do so in the stipulated time, the matter will automatically go to the Election Commission, which will have to finalize one name out of four, two each from the prime minister and the opposition leader in the dissolved National Assembly.
As the process of establishment of the interim governments is underway in provinces, a caretaker Chief Minister took oath of his office in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Wednesday.
Justice (retd) Tariq Pervez Khan, a former judge of the Supreme Court, was administered the oath in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Caretaker government in three other provinces will take over in the couple of days.
The caretaker governments will be responsible for supervising the elections.
