PPP, PML-N fail to name caretaker PM
Friday, March 22nd, 2013 10:33:07 by Tahir KhanDeadlock over the nomination of a caretaker Prime Minister persisted Friday night despite six days of consultations.
A parliamentary committee, tasked to name Prime Minister for the caretaker set up, failed to reach consensus on a name in the list of four proposed names for the post of the interim Prime Minister, members of the committee said.
The former ruling Pakistan Peoples Party and the main opposition Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) had formed the eight-members of the committee to reach consensus on the name of interim Prime Minister.
The committee was constituted following disagreement between the Prime Minister, Raja Pervez Ashraf and leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, Chuadhry Nisar Ali Khan.
Both sides had rejected each other’s names for the highest post, that was the main reason of the deadlock.
After the deadlock between the Prime Minister and leader of the opposition, the matter was referred to the parliamentary committee, which also could not reach any agreement as both sides pushed for their nominees in three days time.
The matter will now be referred to the Chief Election Commissioner for a decision within two days under the constitution, former Law Minister, Farooq Naek told reporters.
“We have failed to reach a consensus on a name despite hectic discussions over the past three days,” Naek, member of the committee said.
Another member of the committee, Chuadhry Shujaat Hussain regretted at the failure of the politicians to create an understanding on any name of the four personality they had proposed for the highest post.
Election Commission sources said that the Chief Election Commissioner will start deliberations on the issue on Saturday.
The caretaker Prime Minister will lead an interim government which will supervise the parliamentary elections on may 11.
The deadlock persisted as both sides insisted on their proposed names and they were unwilling to take back any of their proposed name, members of the committee said.
They said that there had been some lacunae in the constitutional provisions about the nomination of the caretaker Prime Minister.
