Saturday, March 23rd, 2013 3:37:51 by Tahir KhanThe election commission will name a caretaker Prime Minister within its specified two days after the country’s former ruling party and the major opposition group failed to reach on a consensus name in six days, a senior official said Saturday.
The matter was then referred to the Election Commission late Friday which has time till Sunday to make a decision.
Secretary Election Commission, Ishtiaq Ahmad, told reporters in Islamabad said that the Commission is holding meeting and will reach conclusion either tonight or Sunday.
He said that no decision has yet been taken about the name in the list of proposed four names, each two proposed by the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Pakistan Muslim League.
The constitutional provisions say that the ruling and the main opposition party will name a caretaker prime minister with consensus and if they could not reach any agreement then the issue will be referred to the Election Commission.
The parliamentary committee failed to reach consensus on a name despite three days of discussions.
The former ruling Pakistan Peoples Party and the main opposition Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) had formed the eight- members of the committee to reach consensus on the name of interim Prime Minister under the constitutional provisions.
The committee was constituted following disagreement between the Prime Minister, Raja Pervez Ashraf and leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, Chuadhry Nisar Ali Khan.
Both sides had rejected each other’s names for the highest post, that was the main reason of the deadlock.
Ahmad said the eight-member of the parliamentary committee could not reach at any conclusion and the matter was sent to the Election Commission the Secretary National Assembly Saturday morning.
He said that three out of four members of the commission are attending the meeting and the fourth members will join the meeting in the evening.
“We will try to make a decision tonight or tomorrow,” the Secretary Election Commission said.
The Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G Ibrahim is presiding over the meeting.
The Commission is holding discussions on four names, two from each party, and the panel will choose one with majority, Ahmad said.
Chief Election Commissioner, Fakhruddin G Ibrahim, earlier told reporters in Islamabad that the nation will soon know who will be the interim prime minister.
