The San Diego Padres have released veteran starting pitcher Freddy Garcia for the first time for fifth opening spot since they made a minor deal with him this offseason.
“We talked to Freddy and let him know we’re going to go in a different direction,” said Padres manager Bud Black. “Freddy has had a great career, and I think his intention is to keep pitching … which is great. He’s still motivated to pitch.”
He played the Spring Training game on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies and showed his offensive prowess.
“I tried to do my job the best I can,” Garcia said after Saturday’s game. “If I don’t make the team, it’s all my fault. If I don’t make the team, we’ll see what happens.”
Garcia is a wonderful starter and possesses 14 years of Major League experience and played for several big franchises.
Starting his career from the Seattle Mariners in 1999, he carried his game forward and went onto play for the Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees.
Garcia with lots of big league experience now will represent the San Diego Padres in the coming season. Experts believe that he is brining a new light into the Padres franchise. They needed a good starter and Garcia will certainly help them secure good position in the post season.
Last year with the Yankees, Garcia played a vital as well and gave them stability with his own numbers of 5.20 ERA along with 7-6 win-loss, 89 strikeouts, 1.37 WHIP.
Not only just consistent ERA of 2012 Major League Baseball season, but his career ERA of 4.15 along with 152-101 win loss, 1575 strikeouts and 1.31 WHIP also makes a good competitor for the coming season.
