Lee Hyun Il stamps Simon Santoso in group stage of 2013 Axiata Cup

Korea’s veteran shuttler Lee Hyun Il served the notice of his class in group stage of Axiata Cup and overwhelmed Simon Santoso of Indonesia on Sunday, March 24, 2013.

This 74-minute tussle proved real test for both contenders as they had to sweat hard while piling up decisive figures of 21-19, 14-21 and 21-17.

Lee Hyun prevailed in the opening and ending segment of the showdown whereas the young Indonesian campaigner could pocket the second match point.

The ace Korean shuttler showed his intentions immediately in the beginning of first set as he did not give his competitor enough time to get settled and placed a convincing margin. He capitalised this initial advantage in next couple of rallies and strengthened his grip.

Meanwhile, Simon managed to narrow the gap on points table by prevailing in few uninterrupted rallies. He raised his chances of success by finishing first half of the set with a respectable total but then few back-to-back blunders jeopardised his stakes.

Lee did not squander this opportunity and tipped the scale in his favour with an impressive result of 21-19.

However, second set brought life back into the contest as the Indonesian player showed a transformed character and managed to avoid a straight-set defeat.

This time he did not repeat previous mistakes and gained an immediate advantage. Next couple of rallies saw him playing impeccable badminton and placing a decent figure of 11.

He maintained a significant difference until the game point situation and won this crucial set with 21-14 score.

After this development, the decider became survival of the fittest war as both contenders were just one step away from a splendid victory.

Both male shuttlers remained equal in most part of the game and finally this nerve-racking battle ended when Lee registered a winning margin of 21-17.
