TTP, other extremist groups plan election attacks
Wednesday, March 27th, 2013 9:09:16 by Tahir KhanThe Taliban and other banned militant groups have planned attacks during campaign for the May 11 elections and during polling, the Interior Ministry said Wednesday.
The ministry in a report presented in a high level meeting in Islamabad that Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, two other extremist groups – Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Jundullah could carry out attacks in different parts of the country.
The meeting was convened jointly by the Interior Ministry and Election Commission of Pakistan to discuss security arrangements for the elections, the Interior Ministry said.
In order to ensure security, a joint task force will be constituted which would comprise of representatives of the military and civil intelligence agencies and the Election Commission.
The Interior Ministry also presented a report to the Election Commission about terror threats during elections.
The meeting decided to ask provinces to provide details about cities and areas where deployment of army would be necessary during elections.
The Interior Ministry’s report said that the TTP may target government installations in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and the federally administered tribal areas or FATA.
Jundallah and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi can strike in southwestern Balochistan, the report said, and pointed out that the miscreants are preparing for terrorism in Dera Bugti‚ Nasirabad and Jafarabad districts of Balochistan.
The report says Ministry of Interior has prepared a comprehensive security plan. Two helicopters in each province will conduct air surveillance during the elections.

The TTP has recently issued a statement asking the people to stay away from political gatherings of the three parties – Pakistan Peoples Party, Mutahida Qaumi Movement and Awami National Party.
The three parties support the security forces’ against the Taliban, who had killed several political leaders including a minister in Khyber Pakhtukhwa province in December.
