Chief Election Commissioner holds talks in Balochistan
Thursday, March 28th, 2013 9:51:19 by Tahir KhanChief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim is scheduled to hold talks with political leaders in Balochistan on Thursday to seek their cooperation in peaceful May 11 polls, officials said.
Ibrahim opened his visit to Quetta on Wednesday with a meeting with the caretaker Chief Minister and discussed the possible security challenges for elections.
He told reporters in Quetta that the armed forces will standby to boost security at sensitive areas.
The Chief Election Commission presided over a meeting of top officials and reviewed security measures for the elections.
Ibrahim is on visit to Balochistan along with 4 members of the Commission and will meet with political leaders later in the day to ensure free‚ fair and peaceful general elections.
The politicians who are to attend the meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner belong to National Party‚ Balochistan National Party Awami‚ Balochistan National Party Mengal‚ Hazara Democratic Party‚ Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party‚ JUI-F‚ JUI-Nazriati‚ Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians‚ PML-N‚ Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf‚ Jamaat-e-Islami‚ Awami National Party and PML-Q.
The CEC visit comes a day after the Interior Ministry said that the banned groups can launch attacks in parts of Balochistan during election campaign.
The ministry in a report said that the outlawed Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Jundullah have planned attacks in Balochistan, which had been in the grip of sectarian-motivated attacks in recent months.
The Interior Ministry also said the Tehrik-e-Taliban can also hit election campaigners in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and tribal areas.
