Bomb attack kills school principal, injures 8 children
Saturday, March 30th, 2013 12:31:09 by Tahir KhanA bomb attack on a school in Karachi Saturday killed principal and injured eight students, police and hospital sources said.
Unidentified men lobbed a hand grenade at the four-room private school at Baldia town area when a students’ function was taking place, police said.
The principal, Abdul Rashid, of the Nation School, and eight students were injured in the attack. They were shifted to a private nearby hospital where the principal died of wounds.
Doctors said that four children were at critical condition. All injured children are below 15 year of age, hospital sources said.
Police said that unidentified miscreants had demanded ‘forced tax’ of the principal and on refusal to pay the money, the miscreants targeted the school.
Witnesses said that the attackers threw the grenade near the office of the principal and when the children were gathered to receive exam results. The attackers also fired in the air after the attack, locals said.
TV footage showed destruction inside the classrooms. Police said that nearly 20 children were at the school at the time of the attack.
Paramilitary Rangers and the police arrived at the scene and collected evidences. Police said they are investigating motives behind the attack, which shocked the people as children were injured in the terrorist attack.
Police sources said that the principal was ethnic Pashtoon and he and his school might have been targeted because of his ethnic background.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack.
Karachi is in the grip of political, sectarian and political violence and the law enforcement institutions have not yet succeeded to break the networks of miscreants.
