The St. Louis Cardinals hammered the Arizona Diamondbacks with 6-1 thrashing on Tuesday April 02 at the Diamondbacks’ home-field at Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona in the opening three-match series of 2013 Major League Baseball regular season and leveled the series with 1-1.
Left fielder Matt Holliday played wonderfully for the Cardinals as he scored one run on a single hit and also ran for two RBIs on his five at bats.
“That was a pretty good pitch, too,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said of left fielder. “He went down and golfed that ball out of the air. Typically you’re not going to get hurt when you’re down in the zone like that, but Matt’s got some exceptional ability. That was obviously the offensive turning point for us.”
Later Holliday also said, “Sometimes that just happens, He’s a good pitcher. I don’t know why.”
Though the Cardinals batters played really well but at the same time the Diamondbacks pitcher were also really poor on the mound. They could not just stop the Cardinals’ hitters who consistently played well against their ordinary pitching.
Starter Trevor Cahill started the game for the Diamondbacks and pitched 5.2 innings and received three runs in total along with one homer on five hits as he also could not maintain his ERA which went to 4.76.
“I threw it where I wanted to throw it,” Cahill said. “It is just that he is really strong, and if you get him off balance, he is strong enough to hit it out.”
Jaime Garcia on the other hand, did very well for Cardinals in his 5.2 innings as he struck out four Diamondbacks and maintained his 1.59 ERA.
After the game, the Cardinals manager Mike Matheny also said for Garcia’s wonderful pitching, “There’s no question I wanted to get him through that, especially with his spot coming up (to bat) there, But with him a lot of times, it’s pretty obvious when he hits that wall. He kept fighting but just couldn’t get through it at that point. He knew he’d done a pretty nice job, and we had some fresh arms down in the pen to get him out.”
