Dasti out of prison, vows to contest on two seats
Thursday, April 11th, 2013 11:46:05 by Tahir KhanJamshid Dasti announced on Thursday to contest elections on two National Assembly seats shortly after he was released from Multan jail on the order by the Lahore High Court.
The Lahore High Court cancelled Dasti’s three-year prison sentence handed down to him in a fake degree case and ordered his release.
The court also declared him eligible for contesting the May 11 polls.
Dasti had appealed to the LHC’s Multan bench against the verdict of a District and Sessions Court, sentencing him to three years in prison and fining him Rs5,000 for holding a fake degree during the 2008 polls on a petition filed by the regional election commission.
Dasti’s counsel said that the government has failed to produce any witnesses against his client during Wednesday’s proceedings.
“I salute to the independent judiciary as it has delivered the verdict on merit,” Dasti said outside the Multan prison where his supported chanted slogans in his favour.
“I would contest elections on two National Assembly seat as my mother encouraged me to stand firm in difficult situation,” he told reporters.
He said that he had insisted that his degree is valid and the courts have now endorsed his stance and cleared him of charges.
“I will fight against the landlords who have exploited the people for 65 years,” the confident Dasti said with smiling face.
He had earlier announced to quit politics but changed his decision and said that friends have asked him to fight.
The former MNA will contest from NA-177 against PPP’s Noor Rabbani Khar and in NA-178 against PPP’s Nawabzada Iftikhar Ahmed khan.
