US students visit Taxila to know Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage
Thursday, April 11th, 2013 2:40:32 by Tahir KhanU.S. Ambassador Richard Olson led a delegation of U.S. university students to Taxila yesterday to share with them some of Pakistan’s most impressive cultural heritage sites.
Ambassador Olson reviewed U.S.-funded projects to preserve the historic sites of Sirkap and Jinnan Wali Dheri. The U.S. government has contributed more than $1.5 million to historic preservation projects throughout Pakistan.
“Mutual understanding between countries begins with respect for each other’s rich cultural heritage. We are honored to have been a part of more than 17 different cultural preservation projects throughout Pakistan since 2001, including restoration work on the stunning stone foundations of the ancient city we see around us in Taxila,” the Ambassador said at the Sirkap site.
At Taxila, Ambassador Olson met American university students who are the first undergraduate exchange students to visit Pakistan in ten years. A group of middle-school students from Taxila who had participated in an exchange program to the United States earlier this year guided the delegation.
The U.S. government sends more than 1,000 Pakistani students and professionals on exchange programs to the United States each year.
“I am honored to share with these American and Pakistani students today some of Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage and to experience first-hand with them Pakistan’s world-famous hospitality. Exchanges like these directly connect Americans and Pakistanis. They are the foundation of the long-term relationship between the people of Pakistan and the people of the United States,” Ambassador Olson said.
