Majority in Pakistan favours English medium

A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked “What, in your opinion, should the medium of instruction be for primary education?” Responding to this, 49% said English, 42% said Urdu, 8% said local language and 1% said others.
More urban respondents (61%) think English should be the medium of instruction at primary schools than rural respondents (43%), according to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan.
The respondents were asked “What, in your opinion, should the medium of instruction be for secondary (6th to 10th class) school?” Responding to this, 60% said English, 34% said Urdu, 4% said local language and 1% said others. However, 1% did not give a response.
A comparison between localities shows the same trend here, with more urban respondents choosing English (75%) than rural respondents (53%).
The respondents were also asked “What, in your opinion, should the medium of instruction be for higher education?” Responding to this, 65% said English, 30% said Urdu, 4% said local language and 1% said others.
Overwhelming majority of urban respondents (77%) chose English, compared to rural respondents (59%).
