Musharraf loses appeals in Islamabad, Kasur
Tuesday, April 16th, 2013 12:53:18 by Tahir KhanFormer President Pervez Mushararf’s appeals against rejection of his nomination papers in Islamabad and Kasur were rejected on Tuesday, now leaving only Chitral to contest for the National Assembly seat.
The High court Rawalpindi bench election tribunal rejected former president Pervez Musharraf’s appeal regarding his nomination papers from NA-48 Islamabad.
The former president’s nomination papers were earlier rejected by the returning officers. He was given a chance to appeal against the decision in the election tribunal, but now the appeal has also been rejected.
His appeal for Kasur was also dismissed for his imposition of emergency rule in 2007.
The tribunal accused Musharraf of violating the constitution, imposing emergency on November 3, 2007 and detaining judges. Hence, he does not satisfy the criteria specified in article 62 and 63 of the constitution.
Musharraf was not solely responsible for the November 3 emergency; whole government was involved in the decision, the former president’s lawyer Malik Qamar Afzal argued.
The tribunal concluded the argument by saying Musharraf was the president at the time and was responsible for the steps taken at the time.
Musharraf now stands disqualified from three out of his four chosen constituencies. He cannot contest elections from NA-139 Kasur, NA-48 Islamabad and NA-250 Karachi while his nomination papers were accepted from NA-32 Chitral.
