Senate for Musharraf’s portraits removal from public buildings

The Senate on Friday passed a unanimous resolution, demanding the government to remove portraits of former President Pervez Musharraf from all the public buildings.

The resolution was moved by Senator Ishaq Dar of the opposition Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) party of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the upper house of the parliament unanimously adopted it.

None of Musharraf’s former allies defended the former military President.

The resolution was adopted hours after Musharraf offered arrest and was produced in the court of a judicial magistrate.

He was arrested following the arrest order by the Islamabad High Court for his action to put under house arrest nearly 60 top judges when he had imposed emergency rule in 2007.

The Senate also called for implementation of its previous resolution which had called for high treason trial of Musharraf on his return.

It also demanded that the resolution passed by the House on 23^rd January last year regarding arrest of Pervez Musharraf should also be clubbed with this resolution.

The House also condemned the Thursday’s ‘escape’ of Pervez Musharraf from the court after cancellation of bail by the court.

The Judicial Magistrate, Abbas Shah, granted a two-day transit remand to the police to question him about his role in detention of judges.

The government formally declared Musharraf’s house as sub-jail and he will remain there.

Interior Minister, Malik Habib, told the Senate that Musharraf’s house has been declared as sub-jail.

However, several senators demanded that Musharraf should be sent to the prison as had been done with senior political leaders during his government.

They said that Musharraf is using his Islamabad residence for political meetings and he could do it even after his house arrest.

Musharraf’s spokesman, Dr Amjad, said that Musharraf voluntarily surrendered to the court, dispelling the impression that he was arrested.

Amjad told reporters in Islamabad that Musharraf will be part of the investigation and will record his statement in the judges’ detention case. He said Musharraf is also ready to appear in the court in the case related to the 2007 assassination of former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto.
