Pakistan to participate in US Brussels talks on Afghanistan
Monday, April 22nd, 2013 9:04:29 by Tahir KhanPakistan will participate in the Trilateral Core Group Meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and US Secretary of State, John Kerry in Brussels on 23-24 April, the Foreign Ministry said Monday.
Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani will be proceeding to Brussels to attend the meeting, a Foreign Ministry statement said.
The decision comes at a time when relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan are tense over the cross-border attacks.
During the visit, General Kayani will also meet with senior NATO officials, the Foreign Ministry said.
During the meeting, matters relating to peace and stability and national reconciliation in Afghanistan will be discussed, it said.
The Foreign Ministry said that the Brussels meeting will be part of the high level consultations between Pakistan, Afghanistan and the U.S.
“Pakistan has consistently endeavored to facilitate an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process. Pakistan remains committed to continue its positive and constructive role towards a durable peace in Afghanistan,” the Foreign Ministry said.
It said Pakistan is convinced that a peaceful, stable, prosperous and united Afghanistan is in the interest of Afghanistan, Pakistan and the region.
The NATO meeting will review the status of the joint Afghan/ISAF transition plan, and to discuss NATO’s post-2014 mission in Afghanistan.
