Blast in Karachi kills 5, injures 15

A bomb blast near the office of Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in Karachi killed at least five people late Thursday, police and hospital sources said.

A police officer said that the explosives were attached to a vehicle, bearing an official number.

The blast occurred near the office election office of the MQM in the North Nazimabad area of Karachi, police officer, Zafar Abbas Bukhari, said.

At least 20 people were wounded in the blast and five later died of wounds in hospital. Police said that three real brothers were among the dead.

The blast also smashed widows of nearby shops and houses.

It is the second attack on the MQM in Karachi in three days.

Four people were killed and 30 were injured in a hand grenade attack on the MQM office in Karachi Tuesday.

No group claimed responsibility, however, the Taliban have directly threatened the three main parties in the outgoing government, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), the ANP and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), which are often described as secular.

The MQM said that the office had been closed after the Tuesday’s attack.

The MQM spokesman Wasi Jalil said his party will continue election campaign despite attacks.

Meanwhile, gunmen attacked the check post of paramilitary forces in Hyderabad in Sindh province, critically injuring one soldier.

Prime Minister Justice (R) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso who is in Karachi has condemned the bomb blast near the office of a political party in Karachi in which several persons died and many received injuries.

The Prime Minister directed the local administration to immediately provide relief to the victims and medical assistance to the injured. He is personally monitoring the situation and is in constant touch with the concerned authorities.
The Prime Minister reiterated the resolve of the government to what it takes to maintain law and order and peace in the country so that elections could be held in conducive environment.
