Pakistan grants counselor access to Indian diplomats to meet convict
Sunday, April 28th, 2013 9:34:06 by Tahir KhanThe Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that it has provided 2nd Consular access to Indian diplomats to visit the Indian convict who had been critical injured in an attack in a Pakistani prison.
Sarabjeet Singh, convicted for alleged involvement in a series of bomb attacks that killed 14 people in 1990 in Punjab province, was in a death cell in Kot Lakhpat jail in the Pakistani city of Lahore.
The Foreign Ministry said that the Indian diplomats have been asked to coordinate with Deputy Chief of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Office in Lahore and with the head of Jinnah Hospital where Singh is being treated for Consular arrangements.
Earlier today, the family members of Sarabjeet Singh also visited the hospital and met with the doctors and saw Sarabjeet.
A Foreign Ministry statement said the hospital offered a room for the family members to stay, in case they wanted to be close to the patient, however they chose to stay in a hotel.
“Family members will be able to visit Sarabjeet whenever they want and full cooperation is being given to them by the Punjab Government and the hospital staff,” it said.
“The Government of Pakistan remains committed to provide all assistance necessary to the family of Sarabjeet and will continue to cooperate with the Indian authorities in this regard,” the statement said.
Pakistan earlier said that doctors are working hard to ‘revive the prisoner who remains unconscious and on a ventilator’.
A group of Pakistani prisoners attacked him with bricks, tin and iron rods when he was walking in the premises of the prison, jail sources said.
The Pakistani Foreign Ministry said that the Home Department Punjab and jail authorities are investigating the matter.
Sarabjeet Singh suffered head injuries which rendered him unconscious after a group of Pakistani prisoners attacked him with bricks, iron rods and sharp tins.
