Pakistan to repatriate Sanaullah’s body who died in Indian hospital

Pakistan says that the body of its national Sanaullah, who died in an Indian hospital on Thursday days after he was attacked and injured by an Indian prisoner in a prison in Indian-occupied Kashmir, will be repatriated.

The 52-year-old Sanaullah had suffered multiple head injuries last week after being attacked by another inmate inside Kot Balwal jail of Indian-held Kashmir, Indian officials said. Following the attack he had slipped into deep coma and was airlifted to PGIMER Chandigarh, a premier health institute in north India for treatment.

“We have learnt with a deep sense of grief that Pakistani Prisoner Sanaullah has expired today in a hospital in Chandigarh, India. He succumbed to the brutal injuries inflicted upon him during an attack in a jail in the Indian Occupied Kashmir,” the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said.

“The Government of Pakistan is making necessary arrangements to repatriate his mortal remains to Pakistan. We hope that the Government of India will extend expeditious facilitation to that end,” the Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

He said in a statement that the brutal manner in which Sanaullah was attacked in the jail is most unfortunate and a matter of deep concern for the Government of Pakistan.

“We have conveyed our concern to the Government of India in this regard and demanded that an investigation into the incident be held and perpetrators of this heinous crime be brought to justice,”  he said.

He said the Prime Minister of Pakistan has also called upon the Government of India to ensure the safety and security of all Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails.

“We also reiterate our call to the government of India to hold focused discussions on the conditions of Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails and repatriate those who have already completed their sentences as per the Consular Access Agreement between Pakistan and India,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman also offered its deep condolences to the family of Sanaullah on behalf of the government.

Sanaullah was imprisoned in 1999 on charges of militancy in Indian-occupied Kashmir and subsequently sentenced for life in 2009.

The attack on Sanaullah was seen as an apparent retaliation to the death of a convicted Indian spy Sarabjit Singh on last Thursday. Singh was assaulted by a fellow prisoner inside a Pakistan’s Lahore prison on April 26.

The attack on Pakistani and Indian prisoners has prompted calls for better treatment with each other’s prisoners.
