Gen. Kayani discusses security issues with Nawaz Sharif
Saturday, May 18th, 2013 5:09:59 by Tahir KhanArmy chief, Gen. Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani, Saturday met the country’s Prime Minister-in-waiting, Nawaz Sharif, and discussed with him security issues, PML leaders said.
PML-N senior leader Raja Zafar-ul-Haq confirmed the meeting and said it is a routine practice that the majority leaders are given briefing in the world.
General Kayani visited Sharif’s residence in Lahore and had a luncheon with him, which is a sign of better understanding between the two leaders ahead of the government formation, analysts said.
Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) emerged as the single largest party in May 11 elections and he is set to become the Prime Minister for third time.
Sources said the meeting lasted for few hours and the army chief gave a detailed briefing to Nawaz Sharif about important security matters.
There has been no word from the army and the PML-N party, however, the TV channels reported the meeting while quoting sources.
Political analysts described the meeting as very important development as it will enable the two leaders to exchange views on key issues.
Senior journalist and TV programme host, Mohammad Malick said General Kayani and Nawaz Sharif would have discussed internal security and several regional issues.
The issue of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf is likely to have been discussed as it will be a major issue in the coming months, Malick said.
Musharraf has been arrested in cases in connection with the assassination of former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto and placing top judges in illegal confinement when he had imposed emergency rule in 2007.
Malick said the military had advised Musharraf not to return country before the general elections but he returned in March and was arrested.
