Monday, May 20th, 2013 12:44:45 by Tahir KhanAn anti-polio vaccination team was attacked in Bajaur tribal region on Monday, killing one Levies official, officials said.
Unidentified men opened fire on the team in Bajaur’s Mamond tehsil killing the Levies man deployed for the purpose of security.
The attackers escaped from the site of the incident. No group claimed responsibility.
Taliban are accused of attacking the polio vaccination teams. They have banned vaccination in South and North Waziristan to protest against the US drone strikes and that the polio team could use the vaccination for espionage.
The security forces conducted operation after the attack but no one war arrested.
Earlier in April, a gunman shot dead a policeman and injured another in an attack on a police team protecting women polio workers in Mardan.
Several vaccination members, including women workers, have been killed in recent series of attacks on polio teams.
Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only countries where polio is endemic. Polio cases in Pakistan hit 198 in 2011, the highest figure for more than a decade and the most of any country in the world, according to the UN.
