Tuesday, May 28th, 2013 10:59:58 by Tahir KhanAt least two people were killed and 17 others were injured in a bomb blast outside an Imambargah in Peshawar Tuesday evening, police said.
Police said the explosives had been planted in a motorcycle and detonated using a remote control.
The vehicle was parked near the Imambargah Sakhi Munawar Shah in Imamia Colony on the G T Road.
The explosion was powerful to destroy the windows of nearby buildings.
The injured were shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital where at least three of the injured are described to be in a critical condition.
Deputy Commissioner Peshawar Javed Marwat told the media that the police are investigating as to what was the target.
No group claimed responsibility.
Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso strongly condemned the blast and directed authorities concerned to provide the best available medical assistance to those injured in the blast.
SP City Khalid Hamdani believed that the resident Shia community could have been targeted.
Hamdani added that security is present at the Imambargah, however, the attackers used the cover of darkness to plant the explosives-laden motorcycle close to the building.
Earlier unknown assailants opened fire on a team of polio workers in the Badbher area of Peshawar, killing one woman and leaving another critically injured.
The injured women were shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital for treatment where one woman succumbed to her injuries.
Reportedly, the female health workers were attacked despite the fact that security personnel were accompanying them.
Polio vaccination teams have been attacked by militants in Karachi, Mardan, Peshawar and other Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa districts in the past.
On December 19, the World Health Organisation and Unicef withdrew field workers owing to security threats. However, polio workers from national health bodies continued to serve despite the danger.
