PML-N strengthens parliament position with special seats
Tuesday, May 28th, 2013 11:07:15 by Tahir KhanPakistan Muslim League (PNL-N) party of the country’s Prime Minister-in-waiting Nawaz Sharif, Tuesday strengthened its position in the parliament as it secured 35 seats raising its strength in the National Assembly to 186.
The National Assembly or Lower House of the parliament has a total of 342 seats.
The Election Commission of Pakistan issued notification for allocation of Reserved Women and Non-Muslim seats to political parties according to their strength in the National Assembly, completing the second major process of the election process. The general elections were held on May 11.
The outgoing Pakistan People Party was allotted 7 seats‚ which is now the second largest party and is in a strong position to play the role of opposition.
Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf or Justice Movement of former cricketer Imran Khan secured six special seats while the Mutahida Qaumi Movement four and Jamiat ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) bagged three special seats.
National People’s Party‚ Jamaat-e-Islami‚ PML-F‚ and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party got one seat each.
Apart from women reserved seats‚ PML-N has been given 6 non-Muslim seats whereas PPP‚ PTI‚ JUI-F and MQM have secured one seat each.
The newly-elected National Assembly will meet in Islamabad on Saturday.
The Speaker of the outgoing National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza will administer oath to the new members.
On this occasion‚ the National Assembly Secretariat has established special facilitation desks in Parliament House‚ Parliament Lodges‚ Government Hostel and Benazir International Airport‚ Islamabad for the convenience of the members.
The facilitation desks will be functional from Wednesday till the conclusion of the session.
