Chief Justice takes notice of Gujrat school van fire
Wednesday, May 29th, 2013 1:55:42 by Tahir KhanThe Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry Wednesday took notice of fire in a school van near Gujrat which killed 17 students this week.
“Report be called from the Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum, Govt. of Pakistan, the Chief Secretary, Govt. of Punjab, the Secretary, Transport Department, Govt. of Punjab, the Inspector General of Police, Punjab as well as school administration concerned. Put up in Court on 04.06.2013,” the notice said.
Referring to newspapers comment on the incident, the notice pointed out comments from a local official who had stated that lives could have been saved if the driver of the vehicle had shown some courage.
“That statement provides the starting point of a probe to identify all those responsible for the heartbreaking, horrible tragedy”.
The notice said the killings of at least fifteen young school bound children and a teacher in the fire was no accident.
“This was nothing short of murder or at least manslaughter. The guilty include money-minded transporters who justify the low safety standards they maintain by boastfully stressing on the affordability factor.”
It was further stated in the Editorial that the blaming of one individual, the driver of van and the convenient, standard identification of short-circuiting as the cause of fire are dire signs of guilty seeking to take the old escape route. They are no less than murderers. If they are allowed to flee now, they will return to kill again.
Taking the cognizance Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry passed the following order:-
