Pakistan, US agree to continue work for Afghan peace

Pakistan and the United States Thursday reaffirmed their desire to work closely for consolidation of bilateral relations and partnership in all spheres of cooperation including peace and stability in the region.

 

The US special envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan James F. Dobbins called on Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani in Islamabad discussed bilateral relations and regional situation including latest developments in Afghanistan took place, the Foreign Ministry said.

 

They also agreed to work for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.

 

The two sides exchanged views on several actions to be taken in the realm of bilateral cooperation.

 

The Foreign Secretary also briefed the new US Special Representative about the steps taken by Pakistan for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to remain positively engaged in supporting the peace process.

 

This was the first visit to Pakistan by James F. Dobbins after his appointment as AfPak envoy this year.

 

The US envoy also visited Afghanistan and held talks with the leaders on security issues.

 

The visit comes at the time of tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan over the cross-border firing and the alleged constructions by Pakistani forces on the Afghan side of the border.

 

Meanwhile President PML(N)‚ Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif has said that Pakistan and the United States will work in complete cooperation to curb terrorism.

 

Talking to USA Special Envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan‚ James Dobbins in Lahore on Thursday evening he said that PML(N) government will take effective measures for improving the living standard of common man.

 

He said that all available resources will be utilized to tackle the energy crisis.

 

James Dobbins assured that American businessmen will invest in Pakistan to strengthen its economy. He said the United States will continue to play its role for strengthening democracy in Pakistan.

 

The US envoy was accompanied by Special Assistant to the US President retired Lt. Gen Doug Lute and Charge d’ Affaires US Embassy Islamabad Ambassador Richard Hoagland.
