Prime Minister in-waiting Nawaz Sharif Friday expressed strong reservations over US drone attacks in Pakistani territory.
In a statement, Nawaz Sharif said that the drone strikes were not only violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty but also against international laws and UN charter.
A spokesman for Nawaz Sharif said that the concern was conveyed to the US chargé d’affaires in Islamabad.
The statement came a day after Pakistani Taliban withdrew ceasefire offer after an unmanned drone killed militia’s deputy chief Waliur Rehman in North Waziristan tribal region near Afghan border.
Taliban had offered peace talks to the new government that had raised hopes for an end to the on-going Taliban insurgency. But the US drone strike has now diminished chances of the dialogue.
Slain Taliban leader was believed to be a strong supporter of peace talks, Taliban leaders say.
Earlier a senior leader of Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) party said that his new government will devise a national policy on the US drone attacks which are violation of national sovereignty.
Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan told the media that all stakeholders will be taken into confidence before announcing the policy on drone attacks.
He said that drone attacks obstruct peace efforts as they help regroup the militants.
Chaudhry Nisar said the new government will also take all political forces on board while devising strategy to overcome other challenges being faced by the country.
Shabaz Sharif, the Chief Minister-elect of Punjab Province, said Friday that Nawaz Sharif will vigorously take up the drone issues with the US.
