German Foreign Minister begins Pakistan’s visit
Saturday, June 8th, 2013 11:20:41 by Tahir KhanGerman Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has embarked on two-day visit to Pakistan for talks with the new government on bilateral and regional matters, focusing on security issues and peace in Afghanistan.
The Foreign Ministry says that the German Foreign Minister will call on Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif and hold talks in the Foreign Ministry. He will meet National Security Adviser Sartaj Aziz, who is also adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs.
The visit takes place immediately after the election of new Government in Pakistan.
“It will provide an opportunity to German Foreign Minister to meet the new leadership in Pakistan,” the Foreign Ministry said.
“We view our relations with Germany, an important partner, on sustained and long term basis”.
The visit will further help in strengthening the bilateral ties between the two countries, a Foreign Ministry statement said.
Sources said that peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan would be one of the important issues to be discussed during the talks.
Germany had been deeply involved in Afghan peace efforts in recent years and the country was the first to invite Taliban for talks.
The German initiative later led to the Taliban’s exploratory talks with the Taliban in Qatar.
