UN Chief: Pakistan’s democratic progress to get boost under Nawaz Sharif
Sunday, June 9th, 2013 5:19:52 by Tahir KhanSecretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed the confidence that under Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s leadership, Pakistan would build on its democratic achievements and further strengthen its existing partnership with the United Nations.
In a message of congratulations to the Pakistani leader on his assumption of the office of prime minister, the UN chief said he was confident that Nawaz Sharif would ensure women’s empowerment, advancement of human rights, and progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the eight targets agreed by world leaders in 2000 to improve people’s lives around the world.
“I would like to reiterate my welcome for the first-ever transition in Pakistan from one civilian government to another, which was achieved through the historic 11 May 2013 elections,” Ban wrote to Prime Minister Sharif.
“By exercising their constitutional right to vote, the people of Pakistan have reaffirmed their desire for and commitment to a democratic Pakistan and their respect for the constitution. This is a significant step forward for democracy in the country.”
The secretary-general praised Pakistan’s “active and constructive” role at the United Nations, especially contribution to in peacekeeping operations.
“The status of Pakistan as one of the largest troop contributors to peacekeeping operations and its membership in the Security Council are testament to this,” he said.
“I am certain that, under your leadership, the partnership that has been built over the years between Pakistan and the United Nations will continue to grow as we strive to fulfil the expectation of Member States and their citizens for peace, progress and prosperity.”
Ban said he was looking forward to working with the Prime Minister and welcomes Pakistan’s support for regional cooperation, particularly as it contributes to supporting stability and reconciliation in Afghanistan.
“I look forward to working closely with your Government to find a better and more effective ways to meet some of the more pressing challenges facing the international community at this moment,” the secretary-general said in his message to the prime minister.
