Committee to suggest PIA restructuring
Friday, June 14th, 2013 8:05:00 by Tahir KhanPrime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has constituted a four member committee for restructuring and reforming of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the national flag carrier, the PM office said Friday.
Those included in the committee are Mr. Muhammad Ishaq Dar Minister for Finance, Capt. Shujaat Azeem Advisor on Aviation, Mr. Shaukat Fayyaz Ahmed Tarin and Mr. Navaied Malik.
The decision was taken at a high level meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office this afternoon to take stock of PIA with Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif in the chair.
The PIA currently loses millions of rupees daily, official sources say.
The Prime Minister directed the committee to come up with proposals and recommendations at the next meeting for addressing the problems of PIA in order to make it a viable entity.
During the meeting, the problems, issues facing the PIA and the ways and means to address them came under discussion in detail.
The National flag carrier has suffered accumulated losses of Rs: 160 billion during the past five years yet its management has raised the salaries of the staff which will put a further burden of Rs3 billion annually, a recent media report said.
In 2012 alone, the national airline sustained a loss of Rs30 billion and the audited accounts would be placed before its board on April 24.
Those who attended the meeting included Mr. Muhammad Ishaq Dar Minister for Finance, Shahid Khakan Abbasi Minister for Petroleum, Mr. Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Chief Minister Punjab, Capt. Shujaat Azeem, Advisor on Aviation, Mr. Shaukat Fayaz Ahmed Tarin, Mr. Navaied Malik and senior officials of the Prime Minister’s Office.
