Bomber kills 28 at funeral near Mardan
Tuesday, June 18th, 2013 10:07:09 by Tahir KhanAt least 28 people, including a member of provincial assembly, were killed while 25 others were injured in a suicide attack in a funeral near Mardan on Tuesday, police said.
Deputy Inspector-General Mardan Jaffar Khan said the funeral prayers of a petrol station owner Haji Abdullah, was being offered, when the suicide attack took place in Sher Garh, located 20 kilometers from Mardan city.
Abdullah a well-known figure in the area was killed by unknown gunmen on Monday.
Member of the provincial assembly Imran Mohmand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was also killed in the attack. The MPA was rushed to Mardan Medical Complex, where he succumbed to his wounds.
Security forces and the rescue team reached the site. Dead bodies and Injured were shifted to hospital in Mardan, while security forces cordoned off the area.
According to the Provincial Information Minister Shaukat Yousafzai, initial reports indicate that the blast was a suicide attack. Yousafzai added that at least 25 people were injured in the blast.
No militant group immediately claimed responsibility of the attack.
President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and political leaders strongly condemned the attack.
The leaders expressed heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved families and also directed the concerned authorities to provide best possible medical assistance to the injured.
