Britain resumes Afghan detainees’ handover to Karzai’s gov’t
Friday, June 28th, 2013 12:40:34 by Tahir KhanThe United Kingdom has resumed the transfer of detainees to Afghan custody, the British embassy in Kabul said Friday after the Afghan authorities had called for the handover.
“The UK Government is pleased that a UK court has approved the transfer into Afghan custody of those UK captured detainees who have given their consent,” a statement said.
It said the UK Government recognises Afghanistan as a sovereign country and it has always been the UK’s intention to transfer UK captured detainees as quickly as is legally possible to the Afghan authorities.
“We are confident that it is safe to transfer detainees to the Afghan National Detention Facility in Parwan where detainees will not face a real risk of torture or serious mistreatment,” the statement said.
It said the US is working closely with the Afghan Authorities on the handover of the detainees, adding the first detainees were transferred to Afghan custody last night and more will follow in coming days.
The issue had caused tension between the two governments in recent weeks and Kabul wanted custody of the detainees.
Earlier, the US also handed over the control of Afghan detainees at the Bagram airbase.
The US has however refused to free and handover the Afghan prisoners at the infamous Guantanamo detention center.
