27 Pakistanis detained in Malaysia set to be flown back home

Twenty-seven Pakistanis detained in an immigration centre in the Malaysian state of Melaka are set to be released within the next few days to be reunited with their families in Pakistan before Eidul Fitr.

Efforts to secure their release started following a visit last Friday by Pakistan High Commissioner to Malaysia, Mr. Shahid Kiani and Community Welfare Counselor Mr. Azhar Hashmi to the Machap Umboo Immigration Detention Centre in Melaka.

The High Commissioner was told by the camp authorities there were 33 male Pakistanis detained in the centre. Of them, four were under investigation, two on hold for deportation because their court cases were pending while 27 others were ready for deportation.

The HE spent three hours with the Pakistani detainees and assured them they would be provided with full legal support and assistance by the Mission and arrangements would be made to fly them to Pakistan well before Eidul Fitr.

Of the 27 detainees at Melaka detention centres, 13 are without valid travel documents and their applications are being processed for issuance of emergency passports to them. The remaining 11 who possess valid passports are likely to be flown back to Pakistan within the next few days. Efforts are already under way to arrange for their air tickets for the homeward journey.

Meanwhile, the High Commissioner has instructed the Community Welfare Wing of the Mission to double its efforts to provide quick and timely counselor access to the Pakistanis detained in immigration camps and jails. Currently, there are 130 Pakistanis detained in Malaysia for immigration violations and other offences.
