Unidentified gunmen Wednesday shot dead brother of Dr Rangin Dadfar Spanta, the national security adviser of the Afghan president, in western Herat Province, Afghan TV channels reported.
The Herat Province police commander says that Wali Jan Spanta, brother of Dr Rangin Dadfar Spanta, was shot dead by unidentified armed men who were riding a motorcycle in Karokh District, Tolo TV reported.
He added that Wali Jan Spanta has been serving as prosecutor in Karokh District. Nobody has claimed responsibility for killing him.
Recent remarks by Dr Rangin Dadfar Spanta that there is nothing like a process of peace talks in Afghanistan and that peace cannot be achieved by pleading with the Taliban, caused massive reaction in the country.
Spanta, the most controversial member of President Karzai’s team, strongly opposes peace talks with the Taliban.
The Taliban have taken responsibility for the killing of Wali Jan and their spokesman, Qari Mohammad Yusof Ahmadi, said that Wali Jan was shot dead in a Taliban guerrilla attack in the centre of Karokh District this morning.
