SC orders local gov’t polls in September
Thursday, July 18th, 2013 3:01:00 by Tahir KhanThe Supreme Court has directed the federal and provincial governments to hold local government elections in September.
Hearing local bodies case in Islamabad Thursday‚ Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry noted that constitution has been violated by not holding the local government elections during the last five years.
Advocate General of Punjab Mustafa Ramday said the Punjab government is committed to holding the local government elections. However there are some matters pertaining to the delimitation of constituencies.
Chief Justice Chaudhry made this statement while hearing a case regarding the worsening law and order situation in Balochistan.
The court had earlier issued notices to the provincial governments to submit a statement today telling the date on which the LB elections would be held. However, the governments failed to give an exact date.
The chief justice remarked that any date beyond September will not be acceptable.
He further said that the governments seem to delay the elections till 2014.
The bench had underlined that the LB polls are important in maintaining a contact between people and the government.
