Chief Justice says does not expect anti-judiciary remarks from Imran Khan

Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry said Friday that it doesn’t look good when a leader of Imran’s stature says– “Judiciary’s role has been very shameful in the elections”
He offered the remarks while hearing contempt of court case against Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf [PTI] Imran Khan for his controversial remarks about the judiciary regarding elections rigging.
A three member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry is hearing the case.
Earlier Imran Khan submitted his brief written statement to the Supreme Court bench in the contempt of court case.
The court did not accept the statement and adjourned till 11:30 am and Hamid Khan was asked to submit a written reply when proceeding resumes.
Hamid Khan‚ the counsel for Imran Khan‚ said Imran Khan has not committed the contempt of court.
Hamid Khan requested the Chief Justice to review the case, adding the PTI chief believes in rule of law & has always backed independent judiciary. “Some people are trying to create a wrong perception.”
Hamid Khan while submitting answer said that Imran Khan and PTI believe in independent judiciary & has equal respect. “He can never imagine of scandalizing judiciary.”
He assured the court that Imran Khan has done no contempt of court and that he just pointed out & raised the issue of rigging which took place on 11th May.
Chief Justice said that Imran Khan has a stature of a national leader hence his statement holds value.
Chief Justice in response to Hamid Khan said that all cases submitted by the PTI on Elections Rigging are referred to Elections Tribunal.
Earlier talking to newsmen‚ Imran Khan said respect of judiciary is part of his party’s manifesto and he has always struggled for an independent judiciary.
The PTI chief said he has not committed any contempt of court and that his stance regarding general elections is very clear.
There was tight security around the apex court.
“16 years ago I came into politics for an independent justice system-I was the only politician who went to jail in the lawyers movement, ” Khan said.
