Rains, floods kill 18 die in country

Heavy rains that caused floods in several parts of the killed at least 18 people on Saturday, officials said. 

Seven persons died due to electrocution and other rain related incidents in Karachi.

 Six people were killed and three injured when wall of a factory fell on a hut in due to heavy rain in the town of Hub in Balochistan province.

Five people drowned in flood water in Derra Ghazi Khan district in Punjab province, officials said.

Also on Friday, heavy rains and floods had killed 13 people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, taking the death toll to 31 in two days.

The metrological office has predicted more rains in Karachi and some other parts in the next 24 hours.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has expressed grief and sorrow over human and material losses in floods, his office said Saturday.

The Prime Minister, who is currently on a private visit to Saudi Arabia, directed the departments concerned to maintain close liaison with the provincial governments for a coordinated response to flood situation.

In Karachi‚ the rain water has accumulated in different areas especially low lying areas while electricity supply was suspended in several areas as preventive measures. The flow of traffic was disrupted and the schedule of flights and trains was also affected.

Vast areas came under flood water after heavy rain in several districts of Balochistan, officials said.

Flash flood triggered by heavy rains swept away several houses in low lying areas in the outskirts of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The rain water damaged several houses and standing crops in the area.

The district administration and Provincial Disaster Management Authority has started shifting the people living in low lying areas to safer places. The Army has also provided six boats to the local administration to evacuate the people from flood affected areas.
