Rains related incidents kill seven in Karachi

Electrocution and other rain related incidents caused the deaths.
Commissioner Karachi ordered the authorities to shift the people from the areas near the canals in the city. Announcements were made through loudspeakers asking the people to move to safe places.
Rains have exposed the incompetency of the Karachi administration as the sewerage system is so faulty that most parts of the port city are giving a look of flood, residents said.
Waters entered houses in several areas and the people are facing problems pump out the water as the emergency service was unable to help the people.
A large number of vehicles were stranded in rain water on roads, causing a traffic mess. The people complained that the local administration has not helped the affected people.
A child was killed from electrocution in Paposh Nagar while another child lost his life in Korangi. In the Defence area of the city a person was killed from electrocution near the KESC office.
The shed of a CNG station located near the NIPA intersection collapsed injuring three people. It is feared that more people are trapped under the rubble.
KESC has appealed to the residents of the city to stay away from electricity poles and wires.
According to the KESC spokesman, 102 feeders have tripped in the city and these will be repaired after the rain stops. Areas without electricity include Nazimabad, Landhi, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Lyari, Malir, Clifton, Korangi, Balida and North Karachi.
Heavy rainfall with thunderstorm lashed Karachi Saturday morning disrupting the traffic flow in many areas and causing difficulties to the commuters, however, it decreased the temperature in the city turning the weather pleasant.
Rainwater filled the streets and roads of many areas including Old City Area, Defence, II Chundrigar Road, Nazimabad, Steel Town, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Shahra-e-Faisal, Landhi and the areas adjoining University Road and Airport Road.
The met department has forecast more rainfall in the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has expressed grief and sorrow over human and material losses in floods.
He said the provincial governments will be provided with all the necessary assistance to deal with the floods.
He directed the concerned departments to maintain close liaison with the provincial governments for a coordinated response to flood situation.
The prime minister‚ who is in Saudi Arabia‚ is constantly being updated on the floods triggered by recent heavy rains.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has also directed the Commissioners of Gujranwala and Dera Ghazi Khan to keep a vigilant eye on the situation in floods in the rain nullahs.
He also directed them to utilize all available resources to provide assistance to the flood-affected people. He said no negligence will be tolerated in the relief and rescue works.
He also advised the peoples’ elected representatives to monitor the assistance and relief activities in tandem with the local administration.
Shahbaz Sharif asked them to keep him informed about the developments in the relief and rescue works.
