Bomb attack kills 11 in Karachi
Wednesday, August 7th, 2013 5:03:12 by Tahir KhanA bomb blast near a football ground killed at least 11 people in Karachi early Wednesday, police and a local lawmaker said.
Sania Naz, member of provincial assembly, said that blast occurred when footballers and members of the crowd were leaving ground after a match between local teams in Lyari area of Karachi.
She said that the blast killed 11 people, including eight children.
The apparent target of the blast was a Provincial Minister, Javed Nagori, who survived the attack, Information Minister of Sindh Province, Sharjeel Memom said. Nagori’s car was partially damaged in the blast.
There was an unconfirmed report that Nagori also received minor injuries. He was also the chief guest at tournament.
Police said the bomb was attached to a motorbike and was parked near the football ground. The bomb went off as minister was returning after distributing the prize among players.
The injured were shifted to two nearby hospitals. Some injured were registered critical.
Bomb disposal squad has reached the area and is collecting evidence.
Earlier, Jawaid Nagori was attacked during his election campaign in May this year.
No group claimed responsibility.
Hours before the Wednesday’s blast, a series of blasts occurred in Karachi late Tuesday. No one had been hurt in the blasts however it had created panic among the people on the eve of Eid.
Prime Minster Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has strongly condemned the series of blasts in Karachi and the loss of innocent lives, the PM office said.
