U.S. withdraws non-essential staff from Lahore consulate
Friday, August 9th, 2013 12:13:41 by Tahir KhanThe United States has evacuated all non-emergency staff from its consulate in Lahore over security concerns, US officials said Friday.
The State Department also issued a travel warning advising all citizens to defer unnecessary travel to Pakistan amid a worldwide alert over al-Qaeda intercepts.
“The Department of State ordered this drawdown due to specific threats concerning the US consulate in Lahore,” the warning at the Department of State’s website says.
The US took the decision following threats to the American diplomatic missions in some Arab countries.
The warning pointed out that several foreign and indigenous terrorist groups pose a potential danger to US citizens throughout Pakistan.
US officials said there is no specific timing when the Lahore consulate will be reopened.
