Pakistan accuses Indian troops of firing at border forces
Sunday, August 11th, 2013 4:21:27 by Tahir KhanPakistan said Sunday that Indian troops fired at its paramilitary forces along the Line of Control (LoC), which divides the two countries in the disputed Kashmir region.
The Foreign Office spokesman‚ Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, said Pakistan’s forces “responded with restraint and responsibility.”
“Indian border security forces resorted to unprovoked firing upon Pakistan Rangers (paramilitary force) in the Sialkot sector this morning,” the spokesman said in a statement.
No one was hurt in the fresh incident of firing along the LoC.
Both sides accuse each other of violating the 2003 ceasefire along the LoC.
“It is important to maintain ceasefire along the Line of Control,” the Pakistani spokesman said.
He said the Prime Minister of Pakistan has stressed the need to optimally use the existing channels and strengthen these bilateral political and military channels to defuse tensions and establish peace.
“Pakistan wishes durable peace in the region to create conducive environment for economic development and well being of the people,” he said.
Guns had relative been silent along the LoC since the ceasefire however both sides blamed each other of violation of the ceasefire this year in January when exchange of firing caused casualties on both sides.
Troops of both countries now routinely trade fire that has heightened tensions between the two uneasy neighbours who have fought three wars, two over Kashmir, since their independence in 1947.
The recent escalations come at a time when prime ministers of the two countries are scheduled to meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York next month.
There is no change in the summit and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif says he looks forward to his meeting with Indian counterpart, Manmohan Singh.
