UN to support Pakistan in war against terrorism, says Secretary General

Speaking at a joint press conference along with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after their talks in Islamabad, Ban Ki-moon acknowledged Pakistan’s sacrifices in the war against terrorism.
The UN Secretary General said the world body will continue to extend full support to Pakistan in fighting this menace, adding Pakistan is an important partner and promoter of peace‚ and is the largest contributor to the UN peace keeping missions.
Describing the May 11 general elections in Pakistan as a milestone in the country’s history‚ he said it is high time for both Pakistan and the UN to further deepen their relations in different spheres.
He expressed sympathies with the victims of the current floods and said Pakistan is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change and natural calamities.
“The United Nations will work with Pakistan to better prepare it face the natural disasters,” Ban said.
Welcoming Pakistan’s progress in achieving millennium development goals‚ he said it is important that Pakistani government further accelerate their efforts to promote education.
He said Pakistan and the United Nations have agreed to further strengthen partnership in addressing regional and global issues.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said Pakistan is working for peace and stability in the region and it is his earnest desire to ease tension with India‚ start dialogue and address all outstanding issues including Jammu and Kashmir.
He said the escalation of tension between Pakistan and India along the Line of Control in the disputed Kashmir region, which has caused casualties on both sides, is a matter of grave concern for Pakistan and the UN Secretary General.
“Pakistan will continue to exercise restraint and act with responsibility. India will also reciprocate to reduce the prevailing tension. We want to deescalate tension through diplomacy,” Nawaz Sharif said.
Highlighting Pakistan’s efforts for bringing peace and stability in Afghanistan‚ the Prime Minister said that Pakistan wants peaceful and stable Afghanistan and will extend all possible assistance for an Afghan led and owned peace process.
