Senior Superintendent Police Imran Shaukat said that Deputy Superintendent Police, Qasim Ghauri, and two inspectors were killed in exchange of fire with the criminals near Safari Park in Gulshan-e-Iqbal area of Karachi.
Two inspectors who were injured died of wounds in hospital, Shaukat said.
He said that three armed men were also killed in the exchange of firing.
There are conflicting reports about the armed men. Some sources say they are militants while other say they are a gang of robbers.
The armed men were thought to be dacoits at first however the officials now think that use of latest weapons show they could be militants.
Rangers and the Quick Response Force (QRF) were called in to assist with the police operation.
The operation is underway and the exchange of fire continues.
According to sources, policemen encountered armed accused in Gulshan-e-Iqbal area near Safari Park where the three police officers were killed while two other cops were also injured.
The injured policemen were shifted to the hospital for treatment while further details are yet to be ascertained.
The sources informed that at least 300 policemen are taking part in the operation against 16 accused who are hiding in the adjoining suburban area of Hussain Hazara and Muhammadi Goth.
Police said that the operation was started at 4:30 am and the armed men showed resistance after the security men surrounded the park.
