Islamabad standoff: Gunman Hayat’s health condition improves: PIMS
Saturday, August 17th, 2013 12:07:59 by Tahir KhanDoctors said Saturday that health condition of the armed man, Sikandar Hayat, who relatively held Islamabad hostage for nearly six hours on Thursday and was injured in police firing, is improving.
According to doctors at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences‚ Sikandar is still in ICU and can’t be shifted to ward.
The spokesperson of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences Islamabad‚ Dr. Ayesha told the media the culprit is still at Intensive Care Unit and police will record his statement after his condition gets stable.
She said that Kanwal‚ the wife of culprit who also sustained bullet wounds‚ has been discharged from the hospital.
Dr Ayesha said that Sikandar is still unable to record statement to the police. She said the patient had a sip and green tea will so he could be shifted to oral diet. “He is still receiving diet through drips.”
Sikandar’s wife Kanwal, who was injured when his bullet had hit her during the standoff, has been discharged.
Dr Wasim, another spokesman for PIMS, said Sikandar is talking and he is now taking diet.
“He is now talking,” he said, adding that Sikandar is talking that Jews cannot browbeat Muslims.
About his mental condition, the PIMS spokesman said more tests will be conducted in a couple of days to determine if he has any psychiatric disorder.
About Sikandar’s wife, he said the police will take her away from hospital for interrogation.
The police have registered case against her as she was believed to be accomplice in the whole drama. Sikanadar faces charges of terrorism and will be interrogated after he is able to record statement.
He had received two bullet wounds, including one in his lower chest that pierced his liver and then into the lumbar region.
The other bullet struck him in the leg and caused a fracture. He is currently undergoing a surgery and that his condition is serious.
The government has formed a three-member investigation panel after Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif ordered inquiry into the incident. The Prime Minister directed Secretary Interior to conduct inquiry and present the report.
Islamabad police registered a case against Sikandar at Kohsar police station Friday under Section 6 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). Sikandar’s wife Kanwal was also named in the FIR.
Sikandar staged a nearly six-hour drama in Islamabad on Thursday and opened fire in the security zone after sneaking into the constitutional avenue.
