Election Commission rejects calls for by-poll postponement
Monday, August 19th, 2013 3:58:50 by Tahir KhanThe Election Commission of Pakistan Monday rejected suggestion to postpone by-elections in some constituencies due to flood or threats of terrorism.
Secretary ECP Ishtiak Ahmad Khan categorically said that by-elections will be held on all forty two constituencies and there is no chance of postponement of elections in some constituencies due to flood or the threat of terrorism.
Talking to media in Islamabad‚ Khan said the Commission took into consideration the situation in Jhal Magsi‚ Balochistan where four polling stations are in flood areas. Similarly‚ intelligence reports had warned of threats in Dera Ismail Khan. However‚ the Commission decided that elections will be held in both the areas according to the schedule.
Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan said out of total 7‚606 polling stations‚ 3080 have been classified as normal‚ 2606 sensitive and 1‚840 highly sensitive.
Ishtiak Ahmad Khan said the Commission has decided to deploy troops outside all polling stations. However‚ the troops will be deployed inside as well as outside the highly sensitive polling stations.
He said the Commission has decided to extend powers of First Class Magistrate to the commanding army officers deployed at the polling stations.
