Islamabad standoff: Doctors allow police to record Sikandar’s statement
Monday, August 19th, 2013 4:17:11 by Tahir KhanDoctors at PIMS Monday allowed Islamabad police to record statement of Sikandar Hayat who had been involved in a standoff with police last week.
Hayat was injured when police sniffer fired at him after he refused to surrender arms. He is being treated in PIMS and had not been able to record his statement. However the doctors on Monday decided that the police can now question him as he is now in a stable condition to talk.
Meanwhile police arrested a man who allegedly provided two machine guns Sikander, near Islamabad, police sources said.
The suspect, Akhtar, was taken to Kohsar police station for interrogation after his arrest.
Akhtar told the police that Sikander had gone to purchase ammunition from a shop on Sialkot road from one Abid.
Officials got information on the suspect from Sikandar’s cell phone record. Police is now searching for Abid, the sources said.
In another development, the authorities have transferred nine of the 16 superintendents of police (SPs) of Islamabad for security lapse. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar had promised action against the police officers due to security failure.
An unofficial report released by the inquiry committee about the incident pointed out major failures in the communication mechanisms of the security forces.
The findings of the committee stated that security forces and the police had been unsuccessful in preparing a well-planned strategy to deal with the situation, adding that the incident had been prolonged unnecessarily.
